Some pests warrant calling the exterminator and other pests are just annoying. You may find that fall is when insects make a dash for your home. Reduce the number of pests that get inside with prevention techniques to make your home a less desirable target. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Tip 1: Block thoroughfares into your home or business.

Seal cracks around the house and use well fitting screens. Make sure thresholds are tight.  An outdoor barrier insect spray can also form a wall of bug killing power.

Tip 2: Reduce habitat

Bugs love to live and breed in dark undisturbed areas. Clean debris out of gardens and trim bushes and remove debris. If you have a woodpile make sure it is placed away from doors and windows. Keep your home or business free of moisture, pick up clutter and sweep or vacuum to remove food particles. Clean under furniture, around baseboards, clean furnace ducts, closets, food storage and pet areas.

Tip 3: Bug specific eradication

Spiders: They can be beneficial because they feed on other insects. Remove a spider without harming it using a piece of paper and a glass. Take the spider to an outdoor area well away from the building. If the spider could be poisonous, step on it or vacuum it and be sure to vacuum the area where you found the web to remove any eggs.

Ants:  If you have an ant hill outdoors close to your home or business, use a bait feeder you can push into the ground. It gives them unlimited access to the ant bait. Ant baits have syrup and an insecticide; one that works very well is Terro. Ants carry the bait back to the nest which will eradicate the entire colony. If you have ants in the house, use an enclosed ant hotel to attract the ants and they will never come back out.

Fleas: To check for fleas in the house put on a pair of white socks and walk around the house. Fleas will be drawn to the warmth and show up on the socks. Treat pets, bedding and the house at the same time. Wash bedding, wash pets and use flea treatment on carpets and sofas.
